Number System

Decimal System:
The number system you ordinarily use when counting is called the decimal system. The word decimal comes from the Latin word decem, Which mean of ten. This system is called the decimal system because it is based on the number of 10.

When you count past the number 9, you say "ten" and then eleven; but it may have occurred to you then eleven is really just "ten plus one," thirteen is really "ten plus tree," and 25 is really just "two times ten plus five." If you continue this method, you can count from 0 to 99 using a product of ten and a number from 0 to 9.

For example:
0 = 0 x 10 + 0
7 = 0 x 10 + 7
18 = 1 x 10 + 8
37 = 3 x 10 + 7
40 = 4 x 10 + 0

This same method is continued for counting numbers as high as you may used to count. Each position is a series of digits. For example, the first digit to the left of the decimal point must be multiplied by 1; the second digit to the left of the decimal point must be multiplied by 10, the third digit to the left of the decimal point must be multiplied by 100 and so on.
